Reps Reject NYSC Constitutional Amendment
Reps Reject NYSC Constitutional
Amendment
The House of Reps have voted to reject the amendment to remove the
one year National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) from the Constitution of the
Federal Republic.
This is an about turn from the Yes vote, the Senate gave to the amendment
proposal yesterday. Read about that here.
The decision to reject the amendment was contained in an emailed
statement, sent to The Herald by Turaki Hassan (@Turakies), the Special Adviser
to the Speaker Yakubu Dogara, on Media & Public Affairs.
No further information was given by the Speaker’s aide on the
vote, and a request for further information was not responded to as at press
time.
It is interesting to note that whilst the Senate provided a
breakdown of the Yes and No votes from their own amendment voting session, the
House of Reps simply said the amendment motion was Rejected, as if it were not
even put to a vote at all.
The Senate had voted almost unanimously to remove the NYSC from
the constitution.
