Sani defers from Kumuyi, tells Nigerians to speak truth to power and defend democracy
Outgoing Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has disagreed with General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, that Christians should not criticise President Muhammadu Buhari.
Kumuyi had during his sermon at the Deeper Life Bible Church Headquarters, Gbagada, Lagos on Sunday, made the alleged comment, adding that true Christians must obey constituted authorities and shun violence.
But responding to the comment, Sani said in a post on his Twitter handle that Kumuyi should allow Nigerians express themselves on what they feel about their leaders.
He wrote: “Pastor Kumuyi is a respectable and responsible man of God, I like him; but he should allow people to express their views about their leaders and speak truth to power; that is their only shield of defending democracy and propelling the wheel of freedom and justice.”
The clergy has being receiving knocks over the comment. Among those to criticise him was a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, who said God deliver Christians “from shepherds that slaughter the sheep, that defend the cruel, that support injustice…”
